He got ready for the day, in his usual sport jacket, polo shirt and slacks, to hammer out some business before the bustle of ball preparations.

She was already at the dining table when he came to breakfast, cool and aloof in her usual spot. His heart contracted at the sight of her in a dark blue pantsuit, gorgeous and poised. He’d been with beautiful women in his life, but she exquisitely exceeded their charms. Perhaps because he couldn’t have her, every single nuance of her physical beauty taunted him.

“Buongiorno,” he said.

“Buongiorno,” she said in that throaty, melodious voice. Cold and unyielding.

As he deserved. For all his courageous acts of espionage, he couldn’t get himself to act with courage around Thelma.

He swallowed to steady himself, more susceptible to her wrath than he thought he would be. He went directly to the sideboard to fix a plate of cheeses, eggs, and sausage, not really seeing what he was helping himself to. When he was done dishing up, he looked down with distaste at what he had gotten. Mindless eating is what it was. He could scrape half the plate back into the containers, but he didn’t bother.

She picked at fruit on her plate while scrolling through her phone. As soon as he sat down, she turned off her device. At least she was polite.

Icy polite. Like an iceberg about to be hit by the prow of a ship. Unyielding and solid.

“How did you sleep?” he asked to make polite conversation.

“Wonderful,” she said.

She did look wonderful. Well-rested. He had tossed and turned last night but she looked fresh and unflappable. Unaffected by their kerfuffle last night.

“Can you please pass me the salt and pepper?” he asked.

As she did so, her Poison perfume wafted to his nostrils, making him ache for her. His reaction annoyed him. He had always been in control of the past few years, but this didn’t fit the norm. He hated what she was doing to him. Didn’t like the fact that she reduced him to a boy in shorts and suspenders.

Their fingers brushed and she flinched.

She set down the salt and pepper and pulled back her hand, casting her eyes down onto her plate of fruit.

He had resolved to not stare at her, but he did so now. His glance lingered on that lovely jaw line and her smooth cheek. Her ruby red lips and her luscious olive skin.

Tearing his gaze away, he stabbed at his food and ate, but everything tasted bland. He forced himself to eat anyway. The day of the Ball was always so taxing.
